Anne Johnson loves the outdoors. She hikes with Tuesday Trekkers almost every week, usually on mountain and stream-side trails.  During the winter she  is a cross country skier.   Anne is a board member of the Metropolitan Democratic Club, established in 1951 as an independent voice.

   Anne was introduced to fishing trips, mountain climbing  and camping by Ralph W. Johnson, who she met while a student at Univ. of Oregon.   Ralph and Anne married and moved to Seattle in 1951, where she graduated from the University of Washington.  They happily raised three children, now grown and doing well. 


  Sam Mace is a long-time resident of the Northwest, conservation activist and organizer.  Sam is the Inland Northwest Project Director for Save Our Wild SalmonHer "professional goal" is to see the lower Snake River corridor restored, salmon and steelhead restored to the Snake River basin, and a modern transportation system in place to replace the lower Snake River barge corridor.     

    Sam is most interested in building broad coalitions to promote river restoration and conservation. Healthy rivers and fisheries can contribute to quality of life, strong local economies, healthy communities, and support traditional livelihoods. Businesses, farmers, fishermen and river advocates can find common ground and shared goals.

    Besides saving salmon, she is very interested in sustainable farming and food issues.  She enjoys fishing, gardening, canning, and white water adventuring.


   Dave Monthie is a water lawyer and policy analyst who has spent 20+ years working on water management issues in Washington. For the past 20 years he has been a policy analyst and manager for King County and the Washington Department of Health. For three years before he was Staff Counsel for the Washington State Senate.

   Dave's involvement in water policy and water law began as a staff attorney at a Legal Aid office in California, representing clients facing water utility shutoffs. He continued working on water issues as staff to a member of the California Legislature, and as an attorney for the California Department of Water Resources. He and his wife Jan moved to Washington in 1988, when Dave was hired as staff attorney for the Legislature's Joint Select Committee on Water Resource Policy.

   Dave is a graduate of Yale University, has a law degree from the University of San Francisco, and is a member of the Washington and California State Bar Associations. He and his wife live in a waterfront community near Olympia. 


   Bartlett Naylor is principal of Capital Strategies Consulting, Inc. CSC, Inc. works with progressive organizations attempting to reform public policies where corporations play a key role. Clients have included the National Environmental Trust, Sierra Club, Wilderness Society, American Lands Alliance, and others.

   Formerly, Naylor served as Director of Corporate Affairs, Teamsters. He represented the Union on various committees, including the Council of Institutional Investors and a California legislative committee reforming securities law.

   He also served as chief of investigations for the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, where he led probes of the savings-and-loan crisis, corporate takeovers, and insider trading.

   He has authored thousands of articles on finance, health reform, and environmental policy. Among his books, he co-authored a history of American banking, a corporate governance analysis titled America’s Least Valuable Directors, and book on the community impact of corporate takeovers.

   He received his B.S.  from Harvard, and  also received an MBA.

   He is married to Nina Patricia Janopaul and they have two children: Elizabeth and James.


   Shirley Waters Nixon was inspired by the work and vision of her former academic advisor Professor Ralph W. Johnson to serve CELP over the years as staff attorney, acting executive director, and more recently as special projects volunteer.  A native of Michigan, Shirley traveled west to earn an LL.M. degree from the UW School of Law, but fell in love with the Pacific Northwest and became dedicated to protecting its natural resources. 

   From their home in Port Angeles, Shirley and her husband Bob enjoy the proximity of Olympic National Park and the wild rivers and streams flowing from the Olympic Mountains.  They are especially looking forward to witnessing the removal of dams and restoration of the Elwha River beginning in 2011.


   John Osborn is the Chief of Medicine at the Spokane Veterans hospital, where he has cared for military veterans since 1986.

   John was raised in Bellingham and Boise.  His mother, Idaho’s first nurse practitioner, introduced him to medicine.  John’s father (and fishing partner), introduced him to Puget Sound and the rivers of Idaho.     

   John founded the Spokane-based Lands Council, and co-founded the Regional Ethics Network of Eastern Washington (RENEW).  He served for 15 years on the boards of the Washington Wilderness Coalition, Idaho Conservation League, Idaho Wildlife Federation, and for 22 years as the Sierra Club’s conservation chair for eastern Washington and Idaho.


    Lauren Rasmussen practices law, and has a private practice with with experience in Indian treaty fishing rights and natural resource protection issues under the landmark Boldt Decision, United States v. Washington, Endangered Species Act, NEPA, and, agency rulemaking, with emphasis on litigation and compliance assistance.  Lauren previously was an associate with Gendler & Mann, and a staff attorney with the Point No Point Treaty Council (2003-2005).  She graduated from Seattle University School of Law in 2002.

    Lauren’s non-legal experiences include Philips Speech Processing (speech recognition software testing, analysis, and creation) and the Source Child Center where she worked as a therapist for emotionally disturbed, abused, and traumatized children.  She enjoys water sports including sailing and fishing, and skiing.
